TAHLEQUAH — The United Keetoowah Band Department of Health and Human Services distributed more than 930 clothing vouchers to school-aged tribal members.

K-8 students received $75 and high school students received $100.

The total investment the tribe made in the UKB Clothing and School Supplies Voucher Program totaled more than $75,000.

In addition to this program, the UKB gives $20 Christmas gift cards and candy to all the children in the tribe, and the Keetoowah Cherokees have a school year assistance program that helps youth purchase equipment, supplies or clothing required in order to participate in school sponsored activities such as band, art, or athletics.

“Students who received this assistance may be eligible to participate in the JOM program at their schools. It is important for tribal members to realize that this was tribal funds and not JOM funding.

“This did not affect their eligibility under the JOM program at schools that offer it,” said Bryan Shade, DHHS director.
