Muskogee veterans serving in Iraq or other areas probably can’t expect Pennies from Heaven any time soon, but they can expect Pennies from Whittier.

The Character Club at Whittier Elementary School is sponsoring a penny drive through Nov. 6 to benefit a Blue Star Mothers chapter. Blue Star Mothers is a national organization of mothers of people serving in the military.

The penny drive will help the Blue Star Mothers pay for supplies and send them to people serving in Iraq.

This is the third year Whittier has had a penny drive as part of its Veterans Day observance. The school collected $237 last year and hopes to collect $300 this year, Character Club Sponsor Mary Holder said.

Students and faculty already are pitching in, Principal Ed Wallace said.

For example, third-grade teacher Becky Irwin has challenged her class to match or beat the number of pennies she plans to collect.

However, the school also welcomes community support, Wallace said. “We want to encourage businesses to help out in this.”

The school also is collecting supplies for Blue Star Mothers.
