As the Arkansas River continues to rise toward a projected height of 38 feet, a Red Cross shelter has been moved from the Muskogee Civic Center to a gym on Bacone College's campus.
"For anyone needing a place to stay, the old gym at Bacone College is open and ready. There are cots available at this time," Muskogee County District 1 Commissioner Ken Doke posted on Facebook.
Doke stated that the storms across Oklahoma have stretched the aid organization's resources thinner than expected.
"With all of the recent events across the state, the Red Cross will not have quite as many resources available as originally anticipated. They will not be staged at the Civic Center as originally posted," Doke wrote. "Those seeking shelter should go to Bacone College at 2299 Old Bacone Road."
The message follows a prior announcement that the Arkansas River would swell to 38 feet high by 1 a.m. Thursday, just under the 39 feet flooding record reached in 1986.
Doke said preparations for aid and response were going well.
"The city of Muskogee Emergency Management and Muskogee County Emergency Management met tonight to discuss their action plan," Doke said. "So far, so good."
