Muskogee Farmers’ Market would like to give a big thanks to those who entered salsa in the 10th annual Salsa Tasting Contest last Saturday, as well as to everyone who came out in the heat to get a taste. We’d also like to thank our guest judges, Joan Eans, Bob Luttrell and Ronnie Pevehouse.

Congratulations to this year’s winners, all of whom reside in Muskogee. In the “Tomato Salsa” category were: Tom Beattie, first; Amy Jackson, second; and Valerie Grober, third.

The winners of the “Other Salsa” category were: Polly Underwood, first; Bernadette Beattie, second; and Tom Beattie, third. An honorable mention goes to Cub Scout Pack 626 of Muskogee.

The Beatties of Muskogee continue their salsa dynasty, now five years running, as one or more family member has earned first, second or third place in one or even both salsa categories, each of the last five contests.

Fresh watermelon is now available at the Muskogee Farmers’ Market. Other locally-grown items at market, beginning with the most recent arrivals include grapes, cantaloupe, eggplant, sweet corn, blackberries, green pinto beans, Brussels sprouts, bell and hot peppers, Asian long beans, peaches, vine-ripe tomatoes, cucumbers, blueberries, squash, zucchini, beets, green and sweet bulb onions, green tomatoes, green beans, new potatoes, sweet potatoes, and leafy-greens such as summer spinach and bok choy.

Other items at the market include free-range eggs; fresh-baked Amish breads, pies and cookies; jams and jellies; authentic Mexican tamales, burritos and breads; barbecue sauce; Oklahoma-made wines; natural soaps and lotions; as well as handmade jewelry, aprons and pot holders, and other handcrafted items — all sold directly by the people who made them.

On most Wednesdays, Michelle Brown, nutrition education assistant with OSU Extension Service, will be preparing and serving free samples of simple seasonal recipes. Stop by between 9:30 and 10:30 a.m. to enjoy the cooking demonstration, weather permitting.

The Muskogee Farmers’ Market is open from 8 a.m. until 1 p.m. Wednesdays and Saturdays under the pavilions in front of Muskogee Civic Center. Come early for best produce selection. All products listed above are not available on Wednesdays. Visit the market to see what’s there, or call Doug Walton at 686-6939 for more information.
