Lauri Henderson, a senior veteran claims examiner for the Department of Veteran Affairs and president of Make Muskogee Music, answers questions about the organization’s event scheduled for June 21.
1 What is Make Music Muskogee?
“Make Music Muskogee is a music celebration day in Muskogee held annually on June 21, the first day of summer. This day of making music takes place throughout the town on the summer solstice. This local event is part of Make Music Day, held worldwide annually on June 21. It is a day for unity in musical celebration and community outreach. In Muskogee, the day’s grand finale is a huge group performance of “Okie from Muskogee” or “Oklahoma.” Make Music Day is different from a typical music festival. It is open to anyone who wants to take part. Everyone is invited to sing and/or play along and enjoy the first day of summer. Make Music Day is the world’s largest annual music event.”
2 Is this event just for adults?
“This free event is open to all ages to attend or participate.”
3 Can any musician participate?
“This day of free, live music performances is open to musicians of all ages, cultures, abilities, and genres.”
4 If I want to participate, what do I need to bring?
“Bring your voice and/or your instrument, but please call (918) 781-3948 for times and locations available to perform. You may also set up your own personal location to perform, but please let us know details so we can add you to our website and mobile app. If businesses or venues would like to host a music activity, event, or performance at their physical location, they should contact us as well. We also welcome sponsorships through financial contributions and donations of goods or services. Your contributions are tax-deductible.”
5 Where will the event be in Muskogee?
“The main event area is at Spaulding Park at East Okmulgee and East Side Boulevard from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. There will be various food trucks, vendors, and other activities on sight as well. There will be additional music activities at Muskogee Public Library, Muskogee Federal Credit Union, Mean Street Motors, Zomac School of Music and other locations to be announced.”
