Bonnie Carter, president of the Alpha Epsilon Omega in Muskogee, answers questions about the Shoe and Eyeglass Drive on Jan. 20:
1 What is Alpha Epsilon Omega Chapter
"Alpha Epsilon Omega is the Muskogee Alumni chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., which is one of the nine black Greek letter sororities and fraternities."
2 What is this event about?
"Our sorority has five national target initiatives, one of which is Global Impact. One of the projects under this initiative is where chapters collect new or gently-worn shoes to donate to Soles 4 Souls which is a nonprofit organization. The shoes are cleaned up and shipped to destinations around the world that are populated with people of color. Chapters also participate in an eyeglass initiative designed to prevent blindness, help restore eyesight, and improve eye health and eye care for millions of people around the world. We collect used eyeglasses and sunglasses that will be donated to the local Lions Club International. Something else that we do that is not mentioned in the flyer is our Pillowcase Project where we make pillowcase dresses and shirts that are sent to Haiti to provide clothing for children in need. We would also welcome any donations of pillowcases for this project."
3 Will glasses, shoes in any condition be accepted?
"The shoes can be new or gently used. Eyeglasses in any condition will be accepted."
4 Do the donations have to be for adults only?
"No, the donations can be for any age...infant through adult."
5 If I don't have shoes or glasses to donate, will money or checks be accepted?
"If you don't have shoes or eyeglasses to donate, we will accept monetary donations which are tax deductible. Checks can be made payable to Alpha Epsilon Omega Chapter. Note: This is an ongoing initiative, and we will be collecting items at any event that we sponsor."
