Hershal McBride

No doubt, Muskogee needs a youth movement, and Muskogee’s mayoral candidate field on Tuesday’s ballot has youth.

But experience is just as important, and unfortunately, the candidates with youth do not exhibit pasts with involvement in community organizations.

We appreciate their ideas and sincerity, but the lack of community involvement leads us to endorse former Mayor Hershel McBride.

McBride came to this community and made it as a businessman, and in his tenure as mayor, he worked well with former City Manager Walt Beckham and the rest of city management. McBride was involved in capital improvement and economic development projects.

In selecting councilors from the wards, this is where we believe Muskogee will profit from new blood, which is why we endorse Shawn Raper, Dale Boots and Jackie Luckey.

Ward II candidate Raper has a strong financial background, and has been on the city Board of Adjustments and serves now on the Planning and Zoning Commission.

Boots, a Ward III candidate, has worked on the Air Show board. Boots also has shown that he would be a person who will ask tough questions at times when some are not asking tough questions.

Ward IV candidate Luckey is former police officer with a history of working with children. He has a strong commitment to and involvement in Muskogee.

As we always state in making endorsements, the board does not make them with the idea of telling citizens how to vote.

While we have definite opinions, our endorsements are offered to spur discussion in the community and encourage you to get to know the candidates yourself.
