The Greater Muskogee Area Chamber of Commerce is offering a new program that could benefit students and the business community.

Intern Muskogee is being put in place because many students graduate without having any experience finding a job, knowing what it is like to have a job or knowing how to apply for a job.

The program is a great way for students to find the answers to those questions. According to a release from the chamber, the goal is to give students a chance to learn about local businesses and the community and develop a desire to work in the Muskogee area after finishing their education.

Chamber members post internship opportunities on the chamber website, and educators guide students to the website to find internships they are interested in. The guide provides employers with step-by-step suggestions and guidance on how to establish an internship program.

This is a desperately needed program. Thanks to electronic technology, students don't learn simple tasks like making change at a retail store without a machine telling them how much change to give. Some students don't know how to write in cursive writing. If they can't write in cursive, they can't read it either. Many seem to think all they have to do to get a job is to make an announcement on Facebook that they are looking. They need help with learning how to fill out employment applications, how to dress when looking for a job and how to put together a resume.

The Chamber is working will local and area schools, colleges and technology centers to guide students to the internship portal. The Chamber will also be involved in training students on resume preparation, interview skills, social media and the workplace and more.

We hope this program takes hold. Businesses can benefit, and students will carry the knowledge throughout their lives.

A comprehensive internship guide for chamber members is available on the website at https://www.visitmuskogee.com/jobs/intern/
