Concerning William Henneberger’s April 21 letter rebutting my April 9 letter: He says I claimed religious sex scandals are exclusively Catholic. Untrue. I certainly realize other denominations have scandals, but, appreciably, most are Catholic. My April 9 letter states my reasons why I believe this is so.

He’s never heard of a Pope claiming to be God. I’ll give one instance among many. Pope Pius IX declared, “I alone…am the vicar of Jesus Christ…I am the way, the truth and the life.” (Entire quote at pilgrimsprogressrevisited.com). Leaving aside various Pope’s blasphemous godhood claims, what of Catholic clergy’s titles of “Holiness,” “Eminence,” “Father,” etc.? Do these lordly titles accord with Christ’s precepts in Matthew 23:9-12? Incidentally, even assuming Catholics’ interpretation of Matthew 16:18 that the “Rock” is Peter is correct, where does Scripture say Peter’s authority was to be passed down to a succession of Popes? It doesn’t. Like so many Catholic beliefs, the papacy’s simply a man-made, unscriptural tradition.

William’s never heard a priest forbid Scripture reading. Perhaps not. However, medieval priests reading Scriptures only in Latin to their Latin-illiterate congregations certainly suggests they were deliberately keeping their congregations Scripture-ignorant and murdering/burning numerous men like William Tyndale for seeking to give commoners the Scriptures in their native languages seems to prove it. (This, plus the Council of Trent’s still-in-effect damning of all Protestants, seems to show Popery is the true “incendiary”). Though modern Catholic clergy might not outright forbid Scripture reading, I suspect they don’t emphasize it. I’ve yet to meet a Catholic who’s very Scripture-literate.

William compared Catholics’ idolatrous Mary-and-saint worship to Protestants’ discussing Paul. Protestants don’t pray to Paul, as Catholics do. (See God’s thoughts on this in Isaiah 42:8 and the first “Pope’s” thoughts in Acts 10:25-26.

William quoted “Judge not…” after spending his entire letter judging me, thus ironically missing Matthew 7:1’s prohibition of HYPOCRITICAL (not RIGHTEOUS - John 7:24) judgment.

Catholic friends, the Book of Hebrews, as no other in Scripture, clearly shows your religion is illegitimate, primarily in proving all priesthoods besides Christ’s are defunct. Please, PLEASE trust Christ ALONE for salvation.
