Recently the Governor appointed a business executive to run DHS. These are the reasons why you can’t expect business people to run government agencies and you can’t “run government like a business” as politicians would like you to believe. First off business has one goal and that’s to make a profit. Government is not meant to make a profit but perform a necessary social service i.e. Fire, Police, Social Work etc. If government were a business then we would have a choice to pay for a service or not pay for a service when we don’t want it. We all pay taxes so that everyone including the most vulnerable can have the services necessary and it’s not about profit. Also putting a business exec in charge of a government agency makes no sense. Would you choose a lawyer to do your brain surgery? Of course not! The state recently did an audit of the agency I work for and thought they would find all kinds of inefficiencies but guess what all they found was that the legislature needed to do more to fund and support the agency. We need to dispel this myth that just because you are good at running a business you will be good at governing. They are two completely different things with two completely different goals. Oklahoma has been applying this business myth for years and it’s gotten us nowhere. Agencies are as efficient as they can be and its lack of funding that’s the problem.
