I have three reasons for stopping to pick up aluminum cans I see in the road. One is that I don’t appreciate litter. Second, I know that aluminum lasts virtually forever and deserves to be recycled. Finally, I know that it takes a lot of electricity to extract aluminum from bauxite ore after it is mined. Indeed, the amount of energy it takes to produce the aluminum in one beverage can is roughly equal to the can one-third full of gasoline. When the can is thrown away, not only the aluminum is lost but also the energy of production tied up in the aluminum. Let’s recycle all we can. It’s good for Mother Earth, and it makes landfills last longer.
