I want to bring to the public’s attention all the wonderful individuals and organizations that we have in our community that help in emergencies, especially during the recent ice storm.

The Red Cross had two shelters, one in Eufaula at the Community Center and one in Checotah at the multi-purpose building. The Hitchita, Leisure Land, Porum Landing, Shady Grove and Texanna fire departments also helped out with shelters.

Many county residents cleaned out their refrigerators and freezers when the power went out and took food to local shelters. Local grocery stores contacted the sheriff, and he and his deputies took food as well. This enabled us to get through the first three days. By that time, we started getting supplies from Feed the Children and the Creek Nation. By the end of the week, we received one hot meal a day from the Red Cross.

Sheriff Terry Jones and his deputies, on their off-duty hours, and volunteer firefighters delivered water and did welfare checks on people unable to leave their homes.

The National Guard brought in generators that kept our shelter and water treatment plants running, and helped out at the shelters, not just taking care of the generators.

Roger Otis from Marine Development helped and used his forklift for unloading deliveries from Feed the Children and water from FEMA. DP Manufacturing let us use their forklift.

This is just a small idea of the help we were given by the community, and we couldn’t have done it without their help.
