ARDMORE — The Checotah Wildcats saw their 2019 season come to a close Friday night as they fell to the Plainview Indians 58-34 in the Class 3A quarterfinals played at Indian Field.

The Wildcats struggled to stop the Plainview offensive attack. In fact the Indians were able to score on every game possession except the last one with reserves in to kill off the clock.

“Games like this you have to perform and tonight they outperformed us. That’s the bottom line,” Checotah head coach Chad Hendricks said.

Plainview (10-1), and ranked No. 3 in Class 3A, finished the game with 42 rushing plays for 367 yards. The Indians added 113 passing yards for 480 yards of total offense. Checotah, ranked ninth, also had a good rushing night In total yards as they had 217 on 33 attempts and added 190 passing yards by quarterback Jacob Barrett for 407 total net yards.

But the big difference in the game’s outcome was the Wildcats’ inability to stop the Plainview offense that relentlessly drove down the field time after time and came away with points following every possession.

It was a stunning start for the contest when Plainview’s Jaxon Clemons returned the opening kickoff 79 yards for a quick touchdown. But on the first offensive play for the Wildcats, Barrett hit a wide-open Brandon Dan with a pass that covered 65 yards to pull Checotah within 7-6 following a failed PAT.

The Indians’ offense then shifted into high gear as they drove 58 yards on eight plays and scored when senior wide receiver Blake Nowell (a TCU commit) took the handoff on an end-around 20 yards for the score.

The ensuing kickoff was not covered by Checotah, instead Plainview’s Caden Pickens coming up with the loose ball at the Wildcat 21-yard line. The Wildcats recovered an Indian fumble at the 11 yard line. The fumble was recovered by Bailey McIntosh and returned to the Checotah 35-yard line.

A three-and-out by the Wildcats gave Plainview the ball at its own 39-yard line. This time it took the Indians just six plays to go up 21-6. The score came on a one-yard run around right end by Tyson AlJbour.

Checotah (9-3) pulled to within a touchdown as it drove 71 yards in seven plays for a score. Elijah Fuller skirted right end and took it into the end zone for a four-yard scoring run.

The Indians got two quick touchdowns early in the second quarter. Plainview quarterback Brock Parham hit Nowell with a 30-yard scoring toss. And on their next possession Clemons ran it in from two yards out for a 35-13 Plainview lead.

With 20 seconds remaining before intermission, the Wildcats cut into the Plainview lead again. This time they took eight plays to move 61 yards for a score. The touchdown came with Barrett taking it in from seven yards out to make it a 38-21 Plainview lead at halftime.

Barrett finished the night with 158 rushing yards on 19 carries. He was 10-15-1 passing for another 190 yards. The Eastern Michigan commit finished with 348 total net yards of offense in his final high school game.

Barrett engineered a drive to start the third and finished off the 65-yard drive by running it in from 29 yards out to make it a 38-27 game.

From there it was all Plainview, however. Parham scored on a 12-yard scamper to up the Indian lead to 45-27. A 49-yard run by Nowell put Plainview up 52-27. And a one-yard scoring run by Caden Pickens ended a five-play, 32-yard drive to put Plainview comfortably on top 58-27.

With 28 ticks remaining, Barrett had one final play up his sleeve before ending his high school career. Pinned at the Checotah 11-yard line following the only Wildcat stop of the night, Barrett broke free and raced 89 yards for a touchdown to end the game’s scoring.

Parham led the Indians in rushing with 107 yards on 11 carries. Nowell had five carries for 91 yards and had four pass receptions for 79 yards.

“We wound up 9-3 and having a chance to play for a district championship was one of our goals,” Hendricks said. “We won a playoff game. Sometimes it doesn’t happen like you want to, that’s just life.”

Plainview moves on to play Verdigris next weekend at a neutral site to be named later.
