The nightmare scenario played out for Rafe Watkins.
With the OSSAA approving the football coaches’ recommendations for district assignments in 2020 and 2021 and the fallout of that on non-district scheduling, Indian Bowl activity will be minimal next fall.
“Worst schedule ever,” the Muskogee head coach said in a text. “But the only way we were going to fill it.”
All three non-district games beginning with Bishop McGuinness, will be on the road. McGuinness, the Class 5A runner-up, will play MHS in week zero, followed by Bentonville (Ark.) West in week one and Coweta in three, with week two an open date.
The Roughers played Bentonville West in 2016 and 2017, splitting those games. The 2016 was the first year of varsity football for West. Neither McGuinness nor Coweta have played Muskogee in the entire history of the program dating to 1906.
Watkins said that Putnam City West, moving from west to east into District 6AII-2, will be homecoming. Hall of Fame night and possibly Little Roughers Night will be against Bartlesville, and Senior Night against Bixby.
That leaves road games at Tulsa Washington, Ponca City, Sand Springs and the new member to the east side district of Class 6A Division II, Choctaw, which happened to eliminate Muskogee at Indian Bowl in the opening round of the playoffs last fall. Sapulpa falls out of 6A into 5A for the next two years, as does Shawnee.
The good news for the Roughers? Watkins noted that a “ton of sophomores” as potential starters in 2021 will get seven home games.
That’s no benefit to next year’s squad, which returns, among others, quarterback/safety Ty Williams and the two leading tacklers from last season in linebackers Darian Davis and Caleb Webb.
“I don’t know. I think we get more focused on the road,” Watkins said. “Get them away from all the distractions around school and home.”
There were no changes on the original proposal presented. The biggest area changes are Sequoyah, moving back to 3A and joining Checotah, Lincoln Christian, Locust Grove, Seminole, Webster and Westville. Also, Webbers Falls moves into Class B, the highest of the two eight-man classifications, leaving longtime rival Midway but becoming a district opponent for a previously non-district rival, Porum.
Year two for Hilldale coach David Blevins has week 1-2 home non-district games against Rogers and Checotah. The Hornets finish non-district at Oologah.
Fort Gibson’s non-district of Berryhill, Catoosa and Glenpool have not been set in terms of home or away yet, Tigers coach Greg Whiteley said Wednesday. Hilldale and Fort Gibson remain in 4A-4 with Tulsa McLain replacing Tulsa Central.
