GORE — The Class A Gore Pirates and the 2A Haskell Haymakers met in both teams opening contests of the 2019 season before a full house here Thursday.
The Pirates held on to take the the 14-7 win.
From the onset it looked to be a wide open, high scoring contest when the Haymakers Jaxson Sanders took the opening kickoff 85 yards for a Haskell score.
Gore came back to return the favor on their opening drive thanks to running back James Dover who rushed for 74 yards on just 4 carries in the first series alone to tie the score at 7.
Dover totaled 140 yards on 23 carries on the night.
“The O-Line did amazing, they were great tonight,” he said.
The other main contributor was quarterback Weston Shanks. Shanks and Dover ran the option all night confusing the Haymakers defense.
The Pirate signal caller held on to the ball 19 times for the game for a total of 122 yards rushing.
Shanks also took part in the winning score with a pass to Dayne Perryman that went for 50 yards and a touchdown near the end of the first quarter.
Gore focused on the running game, passing only six times all night.
“Running, scoring touchdowns and running out the clock, that was mainly the game plan,” Shanks said.
After all the opening fireworks both teams tightened the defense, and neither could add to their totals.
Penalties played a part for both teams Haskell was flagged nine times for 65 yards and Gore had 10 infractions totaling 70 yards.
“We’re young. We’ve got a lot of freshman and sophomores out there and it cost us some big plays,” said Gore head coach Brandon Tyler. “We want to keep improving each and every week and they’ll learn from that. I’m proud of this team, they really stepped up tonight”
Gore will remain home to take on Heavener next Friday while the Haymakers open their home campaign against Porter.
