It’s time for the 18th annual Smallmouth Rendezvous. First Baptist Church, located at 100 Commerce Street in Tahlequah, is once again the site for this fly fishing festival.

The doors will open for the public at 9 a.m. on both Friday and Saturday. Tying demonstrations will be continuous until 4 p.m. Speakers are scheduled for both days.

Terry and Roxanne Wilson have authored five books and numerous magazine articles on fly fishing. They will be tying flies on both days of the Rendezvous. At 1 p.m. on Saturday, they will make a presentation about fly fishing for largemouth bass.

The Smallmouth Rendezvous is a fly fishing and fly tying show presented annually by the Northeastern Oklahoma Fly Fishing Club and the Native Women Fly Fishers in Tahlequah.

More than 40 fly tiers from several states including Kansas, Missouri, Arkansas, Texas and Oklahoma are planning to participate. They will be demonstrating how to tie their favorite flies and advising how to best use them.

Many tiers will be tying flies for catching local fish such as smallmouth bass, largemouth bass and sunfish such as bluegill. In addition, there will be presentations about fly fishing from Montana to Belize.

Lessons will be available for those who want to learn to cast a fly or to tune up their technique. Rods and reels will be available for lessons or you may bring own gear to use.

For a complete schedule of speakers and times, please refer to the club website, www.NEOKflyfishers.org. There is no admission charge.

The public is invited and encouraged to participate.

Terry and Roxanne Wilson’s articles about fly fishing for warm water species have appeared in numerous national magazines in the past 35 years. They were regular contributors to the Federation of Fly Fishers’ (now Fly Fishers International) magazine, The Flyfisher, and staff writers for the Outdoor Guide Magazine based in St. Louis, Missouri.

Their first book “Bluegill Fly Fishing & Flies” was published in 1999. Their second book “Largemouth Bass Fly Fishing: Beyond the Basics” appeared in fly shops and bookstores in 2001 and “Smallmouth Bass Fly Fishing: A Practical Guide” was published in 2007.

Their book “Crappie Fly Fishing: A Seasonal Approach” was released in early 2013. Their most recent book “The Bluegill Diaries: A Fly Fishing Chronicle” was published just last year.

Terry is past President of the Missouri Outdoor Communicators and is the past President of the Tri-Lakes Fly Fishers. The Wilsons are Pro Staff members of Sage, Redington, and Rio. They are happy to answer your questions about products of these companies.

Terry’s original flies for bluegills, largemouth bass, and smallmouth bass were featured in Fly Fishing and Tying Journal and Fly Fish America and were included in the Federation of Flyfishers Fly Pattern Encyclopedia and Innovative Flies and Techniques. Roxanne’s photos appear in their magazine articles, books, and slide shows.

The Wilsons are the recipients of the 2017 Dr. James Henshall Award presented by Fly Fishers International for their many contributions to warm water fly fishing. Come and spend an hour or all day. There will be plenty to see and do.
