Hilldale’s Michael Oeser gets by Oologah’s Brennen Davis, left, and Konnor Davis, right, during the Hornets’ 32-29 victory on Friday.

Hilldale quarterback Johnnie Durossette threw for 375 yards and four touchdowns, and the Hornet defense showed some steadiness, even contributing their own points to the cause, and helped hold off Class 4A No. 5 Oologah 32-29 on Friday night at Hornet Field.

Hilldale’s defense held the Mustangs in check for the first half only giving up one first down and 105 yards of total offense as the two teams played to a 14-14 tie at halftime.

In all Hilldale racked up 466 yards for the game. Playing a majority of the game, Durossette was 23-of-34 with two interceptions, but three unanswered TD passes gave the Hornets’ a 26-14 advantage with :40 left in the third, a lead they would not relinquish.

The Hornet defense gave up three first downs and 105 yards of total offense. Hilldale’s ground game was non-existent to that point with just six yards of rushing numbers. That jumped to 85 in the second half. Michael Oeser led the Hornets with 45 yards rushing followed by Darrin Hays with 42 yards on 18 carries.

“We had our moments. Like I told the kids we are about an inch or two away from being a really good productive offense,” said Hilldale head coach David Blevins. “We just have to keep getting better.”

Hilldale’s first possession was a 10 play drive that covered 64 yards but ended after a Mustang defender pressured Durossette and forced a fumble. The Hornet defense limited Oologah (2-1) to a three and out punt and Durossette wasted little time in taking advantage. On the third play, Durossette found Brayson Lawson for a 69-yard throw and catch to put the Hornets up 7-0.

“Once I got in and settled down everything went pretty well. I threw two interceptions and had that fumble. I have to cut those down. There is a lot of things I can improve on,” said Durossette.

Oologah added two scores to take a 14-7 lead. Zac Wright scored on a 13 yard run for the Mustangs’ first score. Blake Salt hooked up with Cooper Christian for a 52-yard throw and catch for the other score. Hilldale answered with a 12 play, 70 yard drive capped with a Durossette to T. J. Maxwell seven yard toss to knot the game at 14 at the half.

The Hornets scored twice in the third quarter — both on pass plays. The first score came after a long drive from the Hornet 31 yard line that lasted 10 plays. Durossette found Hunter Parson for a 21-yard throw and catch and followed it up with a 60-yard toss to Lawson. That pass was intended for Maxwell but was batted up in the air and Lawson came down with it and raced to the end zone. Lawson led the Hornets in receiving, grabbing eight passes for 178 yards and two touchdowns.

With Oologah backed up at their own 8-yard line, the Hornet defense pressured Salt in the back field forcing a fumble. Dylan Walker jumped on the ball in the end zone for the score.

Walker also had five receptions for 62 yards.

Blevins had high praise for his defense.

“Our defense has looked really good. And I think that comes from our tough schedule,” he said. “We have had some tough scrimmages and last week did a really good job against a tough Checotah team and then tonight they come out and get a touchdown for us and do a great job.”

With 2:21 left in the game, the Mustangs started at their own 20-yard line and put together a nine-play drive. They scored on a 40 yard toss from Salt to Brennan Davis. Salt added a two-point conversion to pull within three at 32-29.

The Hornets recovered the onside kick to seal the game.

Hilldale returns to action next Friday when they host Tulsa Central for a homecoming battle.
