CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – Head coach John Smith made a bold move pulling freshman Dakotah Simpson out of redshirt, but Simpson made him look like a genius as he recorded a first period fall to lead Oklahoma State to a 22-13 victory over rival Iowa in the NWCA/Cliff Keen National Duals at the University of Northern Iowa Dome on Saturday.

“It is about finding a way to win,” Smith said. “It came at the right time for a freshman since we had momentum after winning the first three weights. I am real pleased with effort from our guys down low, but I was disgusted with some of our upper weights.”

OSU (9-1) advanced to the semifinals to face Big 12 rival and top-seeded Missouri. Iowa (6-1) suffered its first loss.

The Cowboys silenced the Iowa faithful early by winning the first three matches to go up 9-0. Tyler Shinn, wrestling with a broken hand suffered at the Reno Tournament of Champions, got a late takedown to defeat Charlie Falck. Coleman Scott cruised to a decision over No. 12 Mario Galanakis before Nathan Morgan put OSU up 9-0 in the dual with a decision over eighth-ranked Alex Tsirtsis.

That set the stage for Simpson, who wrestled his first varsity match. The Cushing native appeared to get taken down by Iowa’s Alex Grunder, but Simpson rolled right through it and came out on top of Grunder and pinned him in 1:17.

Simpson’s fall gave OSU a commanding lead in the dual at 15-0.

OSU beat Northern Iowa 29-5 in a first-round match. The Cowboys gave up just two takedowns during the dual as OSU jumped out to a big lead scoring bonus points in the first three matches.

Shinn got the Cowboys started as he scored four takedowns and recorded a major decision. Scott followed at 133 and promptly got a takedown and pinned Kyle Anson in 1:43. Morgan then took the mat at 141 against 13th-ranked C.J. Ettelson. Morgan got a late takedown and took Ettelson to his back for five points to score a major decision, 13-2.

The Panthers forced overtime in three of the remaining seven matches, but OSU won two of those matches. Jack Jensen and Jared Rosholt both scored takedowns to win in sudden victory.

No. 7 Oklahoma dropped its first round match at the to No. 9 Central Michigan, 21-15. OU began the dual taking the lead 6-0 after the first two matches, but could not sustain the momentum as the Chippewas won six out of the next eight matches.

No. 1 Sam Hazewinkel at 125-pounds defeated Luke Smith by a decision of 10-4. Hazewinkel kept his unbeaten streak alive as he pushed his season record to 16-0. The senior has only allowed 18 points to his opponents this season.

Freshman Brian Shelton recorded his fifth victory as a Sooner. The El Reno native shut out Conor Beebe at 133-pounds with a 6-0 decision. No. 14 Shane Seibert continued his hot streak as he recorded his third fall in his last four matches. Seibert pinned Andy Keller at the 3:55 mark in their 165-pound match. Joel Flaggert held on for his third straight victory as he defeated Wynn Michalak by a decision of 6-5 at 197-pounds.
