Trae Fairchild called it the best possible launching spot for his head coaching career.
“Going to take over a spot you’ve been and already got to work with the kids is as good as any to start,” said Fairchild, recently named to succeed his dad Sam as the boys basketball coach at Warner. His father left to take the boys head coaching job at Bixby last month.
“He and I had talked about it and obviously when I got into coaching I was ultimately wanting to be a head coach,” Trae Fairchild said. “I’m glad it worked out where I could follow him.”
The younger Fairchild coached under his dad in both of his seasons at Warner and played under him at Liberty. He returns three starters, including the leading scorer from 2018-19, guard Jack Van Daley. Also returning with starting experience is Haiden Peters and Camden Chappel.
“We’ve got pieces all the way through the program but the (incoming) sophomore group is the first group I worked with as eighth graders,” Fairchild said.
The elder Fairchild recently hired former Hilldale girls head coach Lance Kight to assist him at Bixby.
Other recent hires
Tina Ramos has taken over the Vian girls basketball program. Ramos replaces Jordan Garner, who has landed at Webbers Falls where he’ll coach the boys. Gore hired Kinta assistant Jay Ray as its boys coach and John Mays, a former Vian coach earlier in this decade, as the girls coach.
