Tonight, Sooner fans will have their fingers crossed on how a playoff committee views their body of work, hoping for a good first position as the weekly evaluations begin.
High school teams on the other hand, decide it on the field.
Through nine weeks, they’ve all put themselves in a position to move on to the second season, or they’re playing the string out.
As it appears headed into week 10, here’s the scenario.
(8-1, 5-1 6AII-2)
Beat Bixby and the Roughers win district. Lose and will finish second. Possible first-round opponents are Midwest City, Choctaw or Deer Creek. Choctaw gets third with a win against Deer Creek, a loss and Midwest City win against last-place Putnam City West creates a three-way tie for third which Midwest City with 12 tiebreaker points would take with a win , Choctaw has seven and Deer Creek minus-8.
(9-0, 6-0 5A-4)
Is the 5A-4 champion and will meet the fourth-place team from 5A-3, most likely Coweta.
(4-5, 4-2 4A-4)
Because of Sallisaw’s win over Broken Bow, the Black Diamonds will finish second. The Tigers will place third with a win against Broken Bow at home and will go to Wagoner in the first round, fourth with a loss and go to Bristow in the first round.
(7-2, 5-1 4A-3)
A win at Cleveland makes the Bulldogs the 4A-3 runner-up, which play the winner of Fort Gibson-Broken Bow at home next week. A loss and it’s a trip to Sallisaw as the third-place team.
(8-1, 6-0 3A-3)
Beat Lincoln Christian at home and the Wildcats are 3A-3 champs and will play the fourth-place team from 3A-4, either Inola, Verdigris or Cascia Hall. Same group of opponents if they lose to Lincoln.
(7-2, 4-2 3A-3)
Will finish third in 3A-3 and face either Inola, Verdigris or Cascia Hall in a road game in week 11.
(4-5, 3-3 2A-3)
Must beat Kiefer to finish fourth in 2A-3. Awaiting the winner, No. 1 Metro Christian, champions of 2A-4.
(8-1, 6-0 2A-5)
Has won 2A-5 and will take on the fourth place team in 2A-6 at home and would host either Hartshorne or Wilburton.
(6-3, 4-2 2A-5)
A win at Spiro gives the Indians third in 2A-5 and a road trip to the 2A-6 runner-up. A loss and they wind up fourth and going to the 2A-6 champion.
(8-1, 6-0 2A-6)
The Ironheads (8-1, 6-0) win 2A-6 by beating Atoka next week. A loss would drop the Ironheads no further than second regardless of what else happens. A Hugo loss to Wilburton would give the Eufaula-Atoka loser second place. If Hugo and Atoka win, Eufaula cannot be passed by Atoka in tiebreaker points. The Ironheads, up by 20 in marginal points, can lose by five or less and guarantee a tiebreaker edge for the district title no matter what Hugo does. By winning district, Eufaula will get the Spiro-Sequoyah loser. As runner-up they’ll get the winner of that game.
(8-1, 5-0 A-8)
Beat Sallisaw Central at home Friday and the Pirates win A-8. Lose and they’re the runner-up. Possible opponents are Wewoka, Konawa, Mounds or Wynnewood.
(3-6, 2-3 A-8)
The Eagles (3-6, 2-3) win fourth outright by beating last-place Talihina. A loss and the Eagles still have the tiebreaker with Porter (3-7, 2-4), who has finished the season, and Hulbert (2-7, 1-4). Warner would play A-7 champ Stroud in the first round.
(8-1, 4-1 C-4)
Gets at least second with a win by seven or more against Webbers Falls or a win and a Sasakwa win and Graham loss.Would win the district with a win and Sasakwa loss. A loss to Webbers and wins by Graham and Sasakwa would drop the Chargers to fourth and a date with C-3 champ Southwest Covenant. Other possible opponents are Coyle, Covington-Douglass and Bluejacket.
A win over Midway likely gives the Warriors third place in C-4 and a probable date at Coyle, unless the latter loses to Bluejacket by 15 or more. The Warriors could end up fourth with a win and a Sasakwa loss that fails to overcome the 24 tiebreaker points between them. A loss of nine or less by Sasawka would keep Webbers in fourth regardless of their win margin this week.
Hilldale, Keys, Porter, Hulbert, Porum.
