Mathis Givens of Muskogee signed Tuesday to play basketball at Northern New Mexico College in Espanola, N.M.
The 5-foot-10 Givens last year averaged 11.9 points, 5 assists and 3 steals while playing for Redemption Life Tabernacle Prep, where he went for one season, while doing online studies to finish his high school requirements at Muskogee High School. Redemption was 20-6 last year playing teams from multiple states, both private and public, particularly in Texas, Oklahoma and Kansas.
“It was a blessing to better myself,” he said. “We have a couple of 6-11, 7-foot guys and most of the teams we played had those and were among some of the top talent in the nation.”
“I just thank God, my family and my coach (Tim Miller at Redemption).”
Givens said he chose basketball over football at Oklahoma Baptist. He played both at Muskogee High through his junior season. His older brother, Robert Thomas, is a defensive lineman for the Buffalo Bills.
Givens will be a guard for the Eagles, members of the NAIA.
