VIAN — The clouds in the sky drizzled all night but it was a Cloud on the ground that provided the spark for the Vian Wolverines.
Gray Cloud sparked the Wolverines’ offense in the second quarter en route to a 47-16 victory over the Millwood Falcons at St. John Stadium on Friday night in the Class 2A second round.
Cloud and the Wolverine struggled mightily in the first quarter, picking up only 31 yards of offense with Cloud accounting for 27, but the second quarter was a different story.
Cloud got the offense moving with runs of four and seven yards on Vian’s third possession of the game. That drive was capped by a Xavin Lackey run of 23 yards.
The second drive for Vian (11-1) took a little over a minute off the clock. Two Cloud carries highlighted the drive, one of 12 yards and the drive capper of 27-yard to put Vian up 14-0. Cloud picked up 52 yards in the second quarter and finished the night with 91 yards on 15 carries.
“I think we came out just rushing and didn’t focus like we should have been,” said Cloud. “But we just calmed down and said let’s do this.”
“We feel like we have three or four starting running backs and why we put them all back there instead of being a spread offense we have got good running backs,” said Vian coach Gary Willis. “We try to mix it up. Seems like a different one every week will step up and play well when we need them.”
The Wolverine defense was stingy all night, holding the Falcons (9-3) to zero yards of total offense in the first half and only 98 yards for the game. Vian also forced a safety in the second quarter.
The only two scoring drives for the Falcons came late in the fourth quarter when the game was already in hand.
“Millwood scares you to death,” said Willis. “They graduated some but they always have those track athletes that can fly and can score on any play but our defense played really well and considering the conditions I thought our defense did a fantastic job.”
Leading 16-0 at halftime, the Wolverines broke the game wide open in the second half. After receiving the kick, Vian wasted little time in finding the end zone.
Javyn Wright found Elijah Wright for a 58-yard touchdown on the second play of the drive.
The next possession for Millwood lasted only two plays. Falcon quarterback Leon Mackie’s toss was intercepted by Javyn Wright to set the Wolverines up at the Millwood 30-yard line.
Three plays later Javyn Wright rumbled 20 yards to put Vian up 30-0.
Vian added a 27-yard field goal by Elijah Mendoza and a five-yard touchdown run by Lackey to balloon the Wolverine lead to 40-0.
Elijah Wright got in on the scoring on the next Millwood drive by picking up a Michael Taffe fumble and returning it for a touchdown.
Vian continues in the playoffs next Friday when they travel to Adair.
“They (Adair) got us in the third round last year and we will start preparing on them just here shortly,” said Willis. “They are a good ball club and a good school. This time of year you can’t overlook anybody.
“It is nice to be playing the week of Thanksgiving.”
