PRYOR – Wagoner did everything it could to lose against Pryor. It started before kickoff.

Pryor’s Trapper Gilstrap passed for 385 yards and four touchdowns all to Garrett Mitchell as Pryor took advantage of third-ranked Wagoner’s miscues for a 42-41 win Friday night at Tiger Stadium.

“We had a bad practice Tuesday and average practices the rest of the week,” said Wagoner coach Dale Condict. “This is what happens when you don’t prepare. We had poor mental effort. We were not ready to play.”

Mitchell turned out to be the big play threat for the Tigers. Mitchell finished with 13 receptions for 357 yards and scored on pass receptions of 85, 70, 11, and 73 yards.

“We knew they had playmakers,” Condict said. “But the missed tackles killed us. If a Wagoner football team scores 41 points that should be enough for a win. But tonight I felt like we had to score every time we had the ball.”

Wagoner fell behind by two touchdowns twice. The second time was after a 73-yard pass on third and long gave Pryor a 34-21 lead early in the third.

But the Bulldogs began to grind things out offensively and slowed Pryor. A 65-yard drive ended with a Chochee Watson 6-yard run that narrowed the lead to 34-28.

Wagoner then took advantage of field position on a short punt. It took just one play for Braden Drake to go 50 yards to give the Bulldogs its first lead since the first quarter at 35-34.

Pryor answered with a drive of its own. Mitchell’s 32-yard kickoff return gave the Tigers good field position. Pryor then quickly moved down field and took a 42-35 lead on a 9-yard run by Jacob Wood late in the third.

Once again the Bulldogs ground out another drive and again it was Watson scoring, this time on a 3-yard run to pull Wagoner within 1. But Jaden Snyder, who had been stellar on kickoffs and extra point, could only watch as his attempt to tie the game went wide right.

Wagoner’s defense rose to the occasion and it was Snyder who sacked Gilstrap for a 10-yard loss to force a punt. The punt was short and Wagoner was poised to take over at the Pryor 30. But the Bulldogs were flagged for roughing the punter giving Pryor a first down.

It appeared Pryor would put the game away after driving the length of the field. A fourth down conversion gave the Tigers the ball at the Wagoner 9, but Wood fumbled the ball and Drake recovered for Wagoner with 5:05 remaining.

Wagoner moved the ball to midfield but once again errors plagued the Bulldogs. On first down from their own 46, a pass completion to Chase Nanni was ruled out of bounds inside the Pryor 40. Wagoner gained just two yards on two running plays. Then on fourth and eight, Sawyer Jones was intercepted by Pryor’s Bobby Belew.

“I hope we have the character to bounce back from this,” Condict said. “I guess we’ll find out next week against Fort Gibson.”

Drake finished with 109 yards rushing on 12 carries. Watson added 76 on 16.
